This year, Ms. Farrah, Starlight School's occupational therapy assistant, created calming kits for her preschool and K–1 students to support the use of calming strategies at home. Each student received a personalized kit filled with sensory tools like fidgets, noise-canceling headphones, a sit disc, and items for deep breathing such as bubbles or a pinwheel. These tools can be especially helpful in navigating transitions in everyday environments like grocery stores, restaurants, or family outings.
The calming kits are designed to stay with the children at home, allowing parents and caregivers to use them in different settings and expand them as the child grows. Since sensory needs often change over time, the kits can be built upon and personalized, making them a flexible resource for children—and even adults—with developmental disabilities.
The project was fully funded by 11 generous donors. Special thanks go to the First Moravian Women’s Fellowship in Dover and Lacey’s Party Pac in New Philadelphia for their major contributions, along with several individual donors from the community who helped make this project possible. Kudos to Mrs. Farrah for all her hard work on creating these valuable kits for kids!
