PRESS RELEASE

Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities Celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

New Philadelphia, March 11, 2021: March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. At the Tuscarawas County Commissioners weekly meeting, all three commissioners signed a proclamation declaring March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Commissioners read and signed the proclamation that encourages all citizens to foster and support such opportunities that include full access to education, housing, employment, and recreational activities. The Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities (TuscBDD) and county commissioners encourage the community to celebrate the many contributions of people with developmental disabilities and raise awareness about the inclusion of all people in all facets of community life.

TuscBDD invites people in the community to share their experiences with quotes, stories, or photos that exemplify what it means to be courageous and why this awareness month is important. “Among many difficulties this past year, our entire community was challenged with how to stay connected, maintain relationships, and continue vital and essential services for people that we serve. It has been even more difficult to connect people with disabilities with their community, but providers, direct support professionals (DSPs), and TuscBDD staff have done a great job in being innovative in their support of the people that we serve,” said Nate Kamban, TuscBDD Superintendent. “As we celebrate this month, we want to remind everyone of the courage it took our community to get through these hard times that we have faced together over the past year. We want to hear stories of courage and reasons why we celebrate this month from the perspective of providers, DSPs, staff members, people we serve, and others in the community.”

If you would like to share your story, quote, or photo, please call Kerri Silverthorn at (330) 339-9683. For more information about the Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities, please visit www.tuscbdd.org.
