The Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually working to improve the accessibility of our website and digital content to ensure we provide equal access to all members of our community.
Our goal is to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, which is the standard adopted by the U.S. Department of Justice for state and local governments.
We recognize that some content may not yet be fully accessible. We are actively working to identify and address accessibility barriers and to improve our digital services over time.
Why Accessibility Matters:
- 1 in 4 adults in the United States (28.7%) have some type of disability.
- 2% have a mobility disability, meaning serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs.
- 7% have difficulty living independently due to disability.
- 5% have vision disabilities, and 6.2% have hearing disabilities.
- In Ohio, 13.9% of residents have a disability—higher than the national average.
- Locally, Tuscarawas County’s aging population and poverty rates increase the need for accessible public spaces and services.
- Barriers to accessibility impact not only physical access but also health, employment, and social participation.
- Adults with disabilities are more likely to experience health disparities and face challenges accessing healthcare and community resources.
Common Accessibly Problems:
- No alternative accessible entrances to facilities
- Doorways and elevators that are too narrow
- Obstructed or uncleared pathways leading into buildings or along park walkways
- Insufficient color contrast to indicate steps or changes in ground level
- Lack of adult-sized changing tables in restrooms
- Absence of large-print or picture-based menus
- Inadequate visual or audible emergency alarms (with consideration that certain lights or sounds may trigger seizures)
