Behavior Support Specialist

Salary: $50,000.00 - $80,000.00 Based on Degree, Experience, Certification

Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Starlight School Principal: conducts behavior assessments and develops behavioral strategies for implementation in Starlight School and homes. Monitors and reviews all behavior documentation. Provides technical training and assistance to TuscBDD staff regarding implementation of behavioral strategies. May provide the required oversight needed for staff who maintain a Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) required credential such as Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) credentials or other appropriate credentials.

Qualifications:

·       Bachelors or Graduate-Level Degree in Education, Psychology or related field.

·       Registered Behavior Technicians or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst preferred.

·       Minimum of three years paid fulltime experience in developing/implementing behavior support plans/strategies.

·       Must acquire and maintain the status of Registered Behavior Technician or other BACB-approved credential within the first 6 months of employment.

·       Must acquire and maintain a certified instructor status in a comprehensive, integrated program that prevents, de-escalates and, if necessary, intervenes
        when behaviors pose a threat of harm to self or others. 

·       Ability to effectively conduct behavioral assessments.

·       Ability to monitor quality of behavior strategies and plans. 

·       Knowledge and skills in behavior support strategies and techniques.

·       Basic knowledge of mental health diagnoses and psychotropic medications.

·       Basic knowledge of Trauma Informed Care practices.

·       Ability to write articulate correspondence and communicate clearly both orally and in writing. 

·       Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license with a record that is acceptable by TuscBDD’s insurance carrier as verified by an annual driver’s abstract.

·       Maintains CPR/First Aid certification.

·       Flexibility in work schedule.

Job Description:

·       Under the direct supervision of the Starlight School Principal, conducts behavioral assessments. Plans, develops, writes, and implements individual behavioral strategies in compliance with all rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, and TuscBDD to meet the individual needs of students and to promote a positive learning experience in efforts to grow and achieve.    

·       Monitors and oversees the effectiveness of individual students’ behavioral plans by reviewing all behavior documentation (i.e., incident reports, behavior plan baseline data, etc.). Updates plans as needed. Compiles statistics on restrictive interventions and reports quarterly to Human Rights Committee.

·       Consults with staff and other entities under contract with TuscBDD for behavioral support services.  Consults with families to provide assistance with behavioral strategies, resources and services. 

·       Observes students in all settings to ensure proper implementation of behavioral strategies and monitors for effectiveness.  Supports school staff in behavioral programming processes/interventions. 

·       Trains staff on a comprehensive, integrated program that prevents, de-escalates and, if necessary, intervenes when behaviors pose a threat of harm to self or others. 

·       Provides technical training and direct support to staff when severe behavior incidents are in progress and intervenes as appropriate.  Observes children in all settings (classroom and home) to ensure proper implementation of plans and to monitor plans for effectiveness. 

·       Participates as a member of the Starlight School inter-disciplinary team. 

·       Attends regional behavior support committee meetings, conferences, seminars as required to enhance effectiveness in position.  Makes recommendations             or program changes.

·       Assists with planning and implementation of staff development activities for training in positive behavioral support/crisis intervention strategies. 

·       Provides instruction to parents/families to increase their understanding and ability to work with their child/children using educational, positive 
        reinforcements,  resources and therapeutic techniques. 

*       Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
 ·       May provide the required oversight needed for staff who maintain a Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) required credential such as Registered                 Behavior Technician  (RBT) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) credentials or other appropriate credentials. Follows applicable laws,               rules, regulations, standards, and Board policies and procedures.
